New Zealand Fantasy Series

Jody mentioned below that "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" is in production over at Disney. Incidentally, the press release Jody linked to gives a Christmas 2005 release date; Disney has abandoned this. I think it would be a good Christmas release (all that snow) but I don't know if they'll wait till 2006 or make it summer. Anyway, this movie is not the most promising fantasy series in pre-production right now. For that, you'd have to look at the studio that made "Lord of the Rings"; we're in pre-production on The Golden Compass, the first book in the His Dark Materials series. I've read the books and they're great; also, whereas "TLTW&TW" has seven writers so far, TGC has one, and it's Chris Weitz, who is great. Here's a Criswell Predicts thing, though:
"The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" is a Christian allegory. "The Golden Compass" is not a big fan of organized religion (although it's set in an alternate world, the villian is in cahoots with a church that is clearly Christian, even Catholic (has the heirarchy of bishops & archbishops & cardinals, &c.). Which of the two do you think will draw more protests from fundamentalists? My money's on the one with "Witch" in the title...
