Who knew that Adlai Stevenson started the TV attack ad? Awesome.
Regarding the "novelty seeking gene", I think that risk seeking is probably a multifactorial trait and under the influence of more than one gene and also one's environment, of course, but overall you raised a lot of good points especially with regards to modern humans taking too few risks in the social arena.
